Nestled on the picturesque East Route of Wuyuan, Moon Bay (月亮湾) offers a peaceful retreat amidst blooming flowers and stunning landscapes. With its serene bamboo raft rides and tranquil natural beauty, the bay is a hidden gem that hasn’t yet been commercialized, making it an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation away from the crowds. The springtime in Wuyuan transforms Moon Bay into a vibrant tapestry of colors, as flowers bloom and the landscape is painted with hues as though by a divine artist. Whether you’re here for a scenic boat ride or a leisurely stroll, Moon Bay promises a unique and refreshing experience.
Recommended Visit Duration
Plan to spend about 1.5 hours exploring Moon Bay, including a 30-40 minute bamboo raft ride. The entrance to the scenic area is about 1 km from the rafting area. Visitors can either walk to the departure point or take a sightseeing bus for a small fee of 10 RMB each way (round trip 20 RMB).
Transportation
Moon Bay is easily accessible from the Wuyuan Railway Station, with a taxi ride costing approximately 10 RMB. If you’re staying within Wuyuan County, a taxi ride will cost about the same.
Alternatively, public transportation options are available, including Bus No. 2, which runs from Moon Bay to Wuyuan Railway Station. However, the bus operates infrequently, with the last ride at 5 p.m., so plan accordingly.
Scenic Highlights of Moon Bay
At the heart of the bay lies a slender island, which gives the bay its name – “Moon Bay,” a reference to its crescent shape, reminiscent of the moon in its first or last quarter. This natural formation makes Moon Bay a particularly enchanting sight, and it is one of Wuyuan’s many beautiful but lesser-known attractions. Unlike more commercialized sites, Moon Bay remains peaceful and tranquil, offering a scenic escape far from the hustle and bustle.
The main attraction here is the bamboo raft ride, which allows visitors to glide along the winding river and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding nature. While there aren’t many other specific activities in the area, Moon Bay is perfect for those looking to unwind, take in the fresh air, and enjoy a leisurely walk along the peaceful riverside.
Entrance Fees and Other Costs
Entrance to Moon Bay is free of charge, but there are costs for the bamboo raft rides. A single raft ride costs 50 RMB per person, or you can opt for a 680 RMB package that includes a 45-minute boat ride along with tea and snacks. For those wishing to explore the scenic area further, the sightseeing bus is available for 10 RMB per ride, but it’s not essential to take it since the area is small and walkable.
As for dining options, there are no restaurants within the scenic area itself. It’s recommended to visit Moon Bay either in the morning or after lunch. There’s a beautiful observation platform offering excellent views of the bay, so make sure to take some time to enjoy the panoramic scenery.
North Bank vs. South Bank
When navigating Moon Bay, it’s essential to know that there are two main areas: the North Bank and the South Bank. Many visitors search for “Moon Bay” or “Moon Bay Scenic Area” on navigation apps, which may lead them to either Wang Village or Shimen Village near the North Bank. I stayed in Shimen Village at the end of March during the rapeseed flower season, where you can enjoy expansive fields of blooming flowers. This area can get crowded in the afternoon with busloads of tourists, so be prepared for a more populated experience here.
On the other hand, the majority of the beautiful photos you see online are taken from the South Bank, where you’ll find the more famous views of the bay. The South Bank is divided into two entrances: the east entrance near Kengkou Village, and the west entrance, which is located about 200 meters east of Zhi Zhen Temple (至真观). If you’re taking a taxi from Wuyuan County, it’s recommended to enter via the west entrance, as the fare will be slightly lower. For those driving themselves, the east entrance is more convenient, as it reduces walking distance and provides easy access to the Rainbow Road, a colorful path leading to the bay.
