The Huihang Ancient Trail (徽杭古道) stretches approximately 25 kilometers, starting from Fuling Town in Jixi County, Huizhou, and ending in the Moxiao Township of Lin’an District in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Located on the northern side of the Qingliangfeng National Nature Reserve, it is flanked by Huangshan Mountain to the north and Tianmu Mountain to the south. This ancient path served as a vital link between Huizhou and Hangzhou, with the most well-preserved section being the winding stone steps within Jixi County, often regarded as the essence of the Huihang Ancient Trail. Historical records indicate that this route was established as early as the Tang Dynasty.
The Huihang Ancient Trail was a crucial passage for trade between Huizhou merchants (Hui merchants) and Zhejiang merchants (Zhe merchants). Many Hui merchants began their ventures with small investments and were known for their hard work and perseverance. As a result, they often opted for travel by boat or on foot. Generations of Huizhou people transported goods such as salt, tea, and local mountain products along this rugged route, which is steeped in the struggles and triumphs of their commercial endeavors.
One notable figure is Hu Xueyan, a prominent merchant during the Qing Dynasty, who, in his youth, also traversed this ancient path, carrying goods on his back while seeking opportunities in Zhejiang. Today, the Huihang Ancient Trail has become one of the classic hiking routes in China, attracting outdoor enthusiasts who wish to experience its rich history and stunning natural scenery.

Highlights of Huihang Ancient Trail
Zhangshan Grand Canyon
The Zhangshan Grand Canyon, historically known as Santianzi Capital and Wangshan Mountain, marks the boundary between Wu and Yue during the Spring and Autumn periods. Established as Zhang County in the Qin Dynasty, the canyon is named after the mountain itself. The area boasts a unique geography and climate, making it one of the few UNESCO Plant Gene Banks in the world.
Within the canyon, the crystal-clear waters flow serenely, and twin waterfalls cascade down, creating vibrant pools that resemble 108 fairies dancing gracefully, enhancing the enchanting beauty of the landscape. The scenic area features over 50 distinctive attractions, each rich in legend and showcasing the unique spirituality of Huizhou’s landscapes and the profound cultural heritage of the region. Among these, the Leader’s Head, Baizhang Rock, Hulu Pond, and Guanding Shenghua are celebrated as the “Four Marvels” of the canyon.
Qingliang Peak
Qingliang Peak serves as the boundary mountain between Anhui and Zhejiang provinces. It is the main peak of the Tianmu Mountain range, standing at an elevation of approximately 1,787.4 meters, making it the second highest peak in East China, following the main peaks of Huangshan.
The protected area surrounding Qingliang Peak is home to stunning Huangshan pine trees and vibrant flowering hawthorn, while its unique rock formations add to the allure. Unlike the abrupt cliffs of Huangshan, the rocks here rise directly from the lush, green earth, presenting vivid and amusing shapes. Notable formations include “Immortal Saws Stone,” “Monkey Climbs Mountain,” “Little Sister Carries Her Lover,” “White Cloud Rock,” “Immortal Cave,” “Turtle and Snake Guarding,” “Lion and Elephant at the Gate,” and “Emperor’s Pool,” with many similar sites numbering between 40 and 50.
The towering stone peaks display a dynamic variety of shapes, resembling flying birds, roaming beasts, human figures, and various objects. Countless streams and waterfalls cascade throughout the area, while the ever-changing cloud rivers and seas of clouds create a captivating spectacle, leaving visitors in awe.
Tips for Visiting Qingliang Peak
- Preparation is Key: The trails at Qingliang Peak are primitive, with no steps, and involve crossing several mountain peaks. It’s essential to prepare thoroughly in advance. Make sure to calculate your time wisely and bring the necessary gear, including sleeping bags, tents, and medications.
- Bring Enough Food: It’s crucial to carry sufficient food for your trip. This will help ensure you have enough energy throughout your hike.
- Water Supply: There are mountain springs on the peak where you can refill your water bottles. Be sure to bring empty mineral water bottles to take advantage of this.
- Dress in Layers: The temperature can drop significantly in shaded areas or at night, so bringing an extra layer of clothing is advisable to stay warm.
- Enjoy the Journey: Despite the challenges, take your time to appreciate the beautiful scenery and unique rock formations along the way!
Jiangnan First Pass
Jiangnan First Pass, located in the eastern part of Fuling Town in Jixi County, stands at an elevation of approximately 424 meters. It serves as a significant pass along the Huizhou-Hangzhou Ancient Trail and is a key route to Qingliang Peak.
At the foot of the pass, you’ll find the Yako Pavilion, adorned with large characters that read “Path Connecting Jiangsu and Zhejiang” in a style reminiscent of Wei Dynasty calligraphy. Crossing the Jiangnan First Bridge, visitors ascend the steps to the pass, navigating steep terrain marked by bizarre rock formations. Among these formations, the Millstone Rock, Heavenly Crown Rock, General Rock, and Sailing Rock are particularly notable for their unique shapes.
The towering cliffs create a dramatic landscape, with the meandering Xiao Yao River flowing through the valley below. The northern cliff features a pathway built from approximately two-meter-long granite slabs, some of which are partially suspended, adding to the adventurous experience. The final ascent consists of over 1,400 stone steps, leading to an opening that offers a view of the sky, marking the gateway of the pass.
Xiaoyao Valley
Upon reaching the gateway of Jiangnan First Pass and crossing the corridor bridge, visitors enter the enchanting Xiaoyao Valley. This valley is situated at the junction of the Huangshan and Tianmu mountain ranges, with its formation dating back over a million years to the Quaternary glacial period. Its features are spread throughout the peaks and slopes, with striking rock formations either standing tall atop mountains or playfully adorning the edges of slopes, often accompanied by pine trees, creating picturesque natural landscapes.
The rock shapes in Xiaoyao Valley are incredibly diverse and captivating, resembling various figures – people, animals, and objects – each displaying unique expressions and lifelike appearances. The valley is fed by the crystal-clear waters from the Qingliang Peak Nature Reserve, which possess a natural beauty and vivid colors that change with the flow. The water can appear a vibrant emerald green, an enchanting deep blue, or a pure jade white, evoking a poetic and dreamlike atmosphere. The valley’s stunning scenery truly embodies the essence of nature, making it a picturesque destination for visitors.
